Minimalism

Minimalism in art is the concept that less is more. The Theory uses less texture and has a more flat look to it. Simple in design but very effective. The technique involves using only a few selected colors and the use of white space.

White space is the part of the composition that has no elements. By an “element”, I mean an object of any kind.

In the case of this poster, the black background is our white space. Minimalism always involves white space strategically to draw your eye to the elements.

Notice also that this poster only uses three colors.

Again, only three colors are represented here.

In the case of this poster, the white space would be the blue background.

Another way we can explain minimalism is to say that it is a stripped down version of itself. Take the least amount of elements you can in order to represent

something bigger.

This poster represents a character many of us know. It only uses three colors and

two shapes, one shape for the eye and one shape for the mask. The two shapes are simply mirrored on the opposite side.

Minimalism is not just for posters, but is used in many other art forms such as sign and web design.

A style that was developed in the 1920s known as Swiss Style, also has a minimalistic approach. The concept is to also use less color, less texture, more white space, and simple typography. One major difference is the use of the grid system.

Each element is placed within a grid as in the poster above.

We see these types of design everywhere. Its in art, signs, web design. Just look at the app icons on your phone. Many of them approach a minimalistic design. Also the layout of any phone or computer uses a grid system to place the elements.
